St. Paul

St. Paul the Apostle Church is a Roman Catholic Church located near the campus of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the Beman Park section of Troy, New York.

We maintain a chapel of Perpetual Adoration. We are "clustered" with St. Peter's Church, and St. Patrick's Church. We share our priests with St. Peter's Church. Our Pastor is also Pastor of St. Peter's.

History

St. Paul the Apostle Parish was established on June 28,1890, by the Most Reverend Francis McNierney, the third Bishop of Albany. Father William O'Mahony was named the first Pastor of the parish. He was given the privilege of selecting the parish patron; he chose Saint Paul the Apostle... the Teacher of Nations.

The cornerstone was laid with great solemnity by Bishop McNierney July 5, 1891. The finished church was a fine Romanesque building with Byzantine touches. It was built to accommodate 450 parishioners. The stained glass windows were designed by Meyer & Company of Munich. Mr. Edward Loth, the Troy architect who designed the church, had spent many years studying in Germany and was very familiar with Munich glass. Our windows are spectacular.

The great bell, the largest in Rensselaer County--weighing about four thousand pounds--was cast by the Meneeley Bell Foundry of West Troy (now Watervliet) during the first decade of the church's life. Our organ, a two manual and pedal instrument with nineteen ranks of pipes was built by Emmons Howard of Westfield, Massachusetts, during the first years of this century. Like all organs of the time, it was a tracker. It was converted to electro-mechanical action in 1952. The centennial restoration of the organ was done by the Rosenberry and Clapper Organ Company of Valatie, New York.

The magnificent marble in the sanctuary (high altar and wainscot) came while Father Thomas Earley was pastor during the years before the First World War. The pulpit and altar rail were added in 1934, under our third pastor, Father Walter Torpey. The chandeliers and rubber tile in the aisles date from the same redecoration. Fr. Earley completed the exterior staircase shortly after World War I.

St. Paul the Apostle School building was erected during the last year of Father O'Mahoney's pastorate. Father Earley, his successor, began regular classes in 1916, with the Sisters of Mercy as faculty. The brick building next door (now the home of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity) became their convent. The Sisters reluctantly withdrew from our school because of a vocation shortage in 1974. A lay faculty continued until declining enrollment and rising costs dictated the closing of the school in 1977. The building is still used for parish and community meetings.

Perpetual Adoration

ADORERS NEEDED!!! AND ALWAYS WELCOME
Our Chapel, the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Adoration Chapel, is located in the basement of St. Paul's church-entrance off the parking lot on 13th Street. Our Chapel is air-conditioned. For the last 15 years, St. Paul's has provided a home for the only chapel of Perpetual Adoration in our diocese. It is open 24 hours a day. We are always looking for new Adorers. Each Adorer is assigned a regularly scheduled time slot (one hour duration). We need Adorers who can substitute for those who might have to miss their assigned hour.

If you are interested in becoming part of this ministry of adoration, please contact: Helen Baker at 518-272-5985 or Marilyn Casey at 518-271-6632. Each year on, or around, September 8th we celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving for this tremendous gift that the Chapel has provided. Call for more information about this celebration.

Perpetual Adoration at St. Paul's will mark its 20th Anniversary in September 2003 !
